Description
In September this year my husband and I walked the SUW and what a great 13 day walk it was. Having reached our senior majority (OAP`S !) we did it the easy way with luggage transfer and the use of "pick-ups" and it all worked extremely well. We were very fortunate with the weather, had a bit of rain on a couple of days but by walking West to East it was mainly on our backs.

The Way took us through an excellent cross section of terrain including much wild and desolate country with magnificent panoramic views of rolling hills and valleys. Some days we did not see a sole. Don`t believe all those earlier guidebooks which read as if you would be walking through massive forestry plantations. True, there are lots of forests but you are mainly walking outside of them. In any case the forests are now in their circle of evolution which means that you experience the many stages of their growth; from the mature, the recently harvested and through to new young plantations. The latter having been planted more sympathetically to included borders and corridors of mixed woodland thus encouraging more plant and wild life.

The trail is extremely well marked and maintained throughout.

We loved looking for the Hoards; a great idea which amused us old folk considerably.

If you have walked The Pennine Way and think that there are no more "wild" long distant walks in our beautiful country you must try the SUW.
