Route Description

Take the A762 for Mossdale and the entrance to the Raiders Road and the Galloway Forest Park. Drive along the Raiders Road for approximately 1.5 miles and park at the picnic place at the viaduct at Stroan Loch, a great place for a casual picnic with fantastic views of the loch.

The walk starts by passing under the viaduct continuing downstream adjacent to the River Dee (Blackwater of Dee). The route goes south and follows tight to the river bank for half of the walk until the path stops and a sharp left brings you back through the woodland canopy and back towards the old railway line and back down to the viaduct.

When walking along the river bank be careful of exposed tree roots and rocks. The walk back through the wood is on an old forest track of moss and grass.

This walk usually takes approximately 40 minutes and is an ideal short walk with dogs but be aware that after heavy rain the river can flood sections of the path on the first half of the walk.
