The Annandale Way

web_aw_finger_post_p1010537.jpg
89 km / 55 miles

Start:       NT062131 - Devil's Beef Tub, Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway.

Finish:     NY190643 - Newbie Barns, near Annan, Dumfries and Galloway.

The Annandale Way starts high above the source of the river Annan with a circumnavigation of the Devils Beef Tub, before dropping down its eastern side and following the river Annan along the valley bottom into the picturesque market town of Moffat.

From Moffat the Annandale Way heads south following the 'Crooked Road' up out of Beattock and over the high ground of Cragielandshill and down onto the Lord of Annandale's Estate where it snakes through forests and over farmland down the valley to Millhousebridge where the route splits into an eastern and western arm that go through Lockerbie and Lochmaben respectively.

The Lockerbie arm of the Annandale Way takes in the Lockerbie Wildlife Trust's Eskrigg Nature reserve, whilst the western Lochmaben arm takes in Castle Loch and then goes up past Joe Grahams monument for fantastic views of the whole of Annandale.

The two arms meet up again just north of Hoddam Bridge where they then follow the river Annan down through Annan and on to its end at Newbie Barns on the Solway Coast.

The Annandale Way been designed to be achievable in 4 to 5 days, with over night stops envisaged in Moffat, Johnstone Bridge / Annandale Estate, Lochmaben or Lockerbie, and Annan. There's also the option of doing a shorter 2 or 3 day circuit or day walks by using local public transport.

An official opening of the Annandale Way is planned for Saturday September 12th 2009 when group members will lead and take part in guided walks that will ensure that someone walks on every step of the Annandale Way on that day. Community buses will be used to pick up and drop off walkers and competitors, with a celebration taking place in the afternoon at Lochmaben Community Centre.
