Waymerks

Waymerks - Hidden treasures

Along the way, keep an eye out for "waymerks" hidden by the path. Thirteen hidden kists, based on traditional designs could be yours for the finding.

The eighth kist, for example, is hidden between Beattock and St.Mary's Loch, carved by sculptor Sam Wade to a 400 year old design. The original panel represents a cattle reiver (or 'raider'), mounted on a horse and wearing his steel bonnet. It was probably once a panel from a wooden bed but was re-used as part of a later wooden kist…

One walk to search for all
Or many walks to find them
Secrets to be shared by all
Revealing what's behind them.

As of August 2004 only two walkers from Switzerland have been successful in finding all 13 Waymerks in one complete walk.
